Pearls are relatively soft compared to other gemstones and precious metals. So it is important to take special care of them to insure they will remain bright and beautiful for generations to come.
Cosmetics, perfume and hairspray all contain chemicals that can dull the lustre of a pearl. Even acids contained in body oils and perspiration can damage lustre in the same way. Therefore, it is best to put pearls on after applying make-up, perfume or hairspray. Wiping pearls with a soft cloth after wear will ensure they remain free from any harmful build-ups. Always keep pearls separated from hard jewellery items to prevent them from getting damaged. Pearls are best kept in a soft pouch.
PEARL RESTRINGING
If pearls are worn several times a week, it is best to have them restrung regularly. Individual knotting will prevent the pearls in a strand from falling off should a break occur. Knotting also prevents the pearls from rubbing against each other.
NECKLACE LENGTHS AND HOW BEST TO WEAR THEM
Collar - 12" - 13" - Usually made up of three or more strands that lie snugly around the throat .
Choker - 14" - 16" - Perhaps the most classic and yet versatile of all single strand lengths.
Princess - 17" to 19"- A perfect support for a pendant and for plunging necklines, as well as crew and high necklines.
Matinee - 20" to 24" - Longer than the choker, but shorter than the opera length, is a good choice for casual or business dressing.
Opera - 28" to 34" - When worn as a single strand, it is elegant and perfect for high or crew necklines, or can double up and serve as a two row.
Rope - Over 45" - This was the favourite of Coco Chanel. It can work as a multi-strand necklace or bracelets.
